Giants Steps

It looks like the Giants youth movement is underway. It's already happened in the pen, and now position players are being shuffled:

The Giants also planned to recall a position player from Fresno, probably an outfielder, and make a corresponding move with Marquis Grissom, perhaps another trip to the disabled list. They held off that decision after third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo sustained what head trainer Stan Conte termed a "fairly significant" right quadriceps strain running out a double-play grounder in the eighth inning.

Now, the front office might have to audible and bring up an infielder instead, although the club could move Pedro Feliz to third base and recall searing Fresno outfielder Todd Linden, whom the Giants will promote only if he can play every day.

At the same time, J.T. Snow said Sunday he was called into manager Felipe Alou's office last week and told Lance Niekro will get the majority of starts at first base, even against right-handed pitchers.

Furthermore, general manager Brian Sabean said any major trades he makes this summer likely would bring younger players who would have a future in San Francisco, rather than seasoned short-timers typically acquired for a playoff push.

I wonder what happens to Bonds in this scenario. This team was put together to try to win a World Championship this year or next. That's probably not going to happen now. Does Bonds stay with the Giants to just chase Aaron, or does he ask for a trade to an AL team so he can DH and save his knees, break the record and possibly win a World Series ring? Can you see Bonds in the Bronx?

Acquiring Barry Bonds would be completely typical for the current Yankees. A full-blown committment to a successful past. It's moves like that that would keep the Yankees in 4th place for another 5 years. Yum.

No Bonds in the Bronx. Please. What, we don't have enough overpaid, broken down, old players?
Bonds likes the west coast, how about just sending him across the bay.

As a Yankees fan, I'd take Bonds for Giambi, straight up. I wouldn't mind even if we had to give up Womack, too, to make the deal happen.

"And in news that shocked even the most jaded baseball fan, the New York Yankees today traded their entire minor league system (and cash) to the San Francisco Giants today in exchange for Home Run champion Barry Bonds, 41.

In a possibly related story, the body of Yankees General Manager, Brian Cashman, was found bound and gagged in a dumpster in Staten Island, with a note that read 'just make the call!--G' stuffed into his mouth..."

Bonds for Giambi - that's funny.

I don't think the Giants would want to move Barry and his fan-drawing abilities at any cost, except maybe to accommodate Barry. In which case, here's something a little more realistic:

Bonds to LAAoA for pitchers Santana and Jake Woods

Alternatively, maybe Bonds to Texas for Soriano + another piece.

Sabean is simply recognizing the current group is flawed, and is making a few PR related/get rid of dead weight type moves, and will likely now do exactly what he said -- make trades and moves anticipating next season.

I'll kibbitz with you just a bit on the youth movement (well, uh, anyone under 33 is a youth movement to theses guys). I think the players Sabean is bringing in stand a legit chance of helping the team this year and next, and can easily top the performance of the released players. It just happens that they're younger.

Many are calling for Sabean's head, which is about the silliest thing on the Earth. I disagreed with a lot of his moves and feel he could very well be a mediocre-at-best GM, but to axe the guy after his first poor season when he doesn't have Bonds, Benitez, plus an ineffective Schmidt is the pinnacle of impatience.

Sabean should be kept through 2006 to attempt to right this disaster, but after that, I think all bets are off. I do not want this man at the helm of a true rebuilding/youth movement, because he has shown little regard for youth until this point.

Bonds would immediately be labelled "not a true Yankee." All losing would be his fault. Any superior play on his part would be credited to Derek Jeter's leadership.
