Late Drives

The Washington Nationals moved into first place today in the NL with a 6-3 victory over the reeling Marlins. They scored all six runs in the 7th and 8th innings. That's been the best time of the game for the Washingtonians this season. Coming into today, they're batting 20 points higher from the 7th on than in innings 1 through 6. Their OBA goes way up, from .316 to .355, and their slugging percentage also rises, from .384 to .429. With today's runs, they've scored 132 runs in first six frames, 101 after that. They're going a great job with tired starters and weak middle relievers.

I wonder how many people realize that if the playoffs started today there would be no Yankees or Red Sox.

Ok, ok, so the playoffs are not starting today, I know that, but the point is the same. The Yankees have $61 million dollars (or so) in starting pitching and they are terrible. In fact the best guy is some double A call up named Wang (at least I think thats his name).

The Red Sox do seem to have some good arms in the starting rotation, with Curt coming back, that should only get better. The pen has struggled (Embry likely had his tires slashed again today, and he didn't even pitch).

Who'da thunk the Nats, Rangers and White Sox all in first place.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that the CUBS are the National League Wild Card Leaders after play tonight!

If nothing else, at least we're finally talking about something other that "juice".

In fact, if the playoffs started today, the only holdovers would be Minnesota (WC now instead of division winners) and St. Louis. Washington, San Diego, Baltimore, Chicago, Chicago, and Texas would all be making their first playoff appearances in a while. A VERY long while for Washington.

Also, you'd have both Chicago teams in since what, the 1908 World Series?

And all three modern-day Washington franchises (plus Baltimore!) would be represented!
