Who's on First?

I just saw the latest results from the American League voting, and Tino Martinez is leading among AL first basemen. Tino is a nice guy and a slick fielding first baseman. He went on a great home run tear. But you might want to consider someone else, like Richie Sexson or Mark Teixeira for the position. The rest of the voting looks really good, but AL fans, you can do better than Tino at first.

You may want to consider someone else, but it shouldn't be Sexson. He's hitting .250 and already has 55 strikeouts. I don't have the stats to back it up, but his numbers late in games or in clutch situations have to be even worse.

Frankly, Tino gets my vote. He single-handedly pulled the Yanks out of their slump in the midst of the crazy NY media. Two months after his return he has established himself as a leader in a way A-Rod, RJ and even Sheffield (who I love) have yet to do.

And where would Teixera be outside of Texas? Tino is not a bad vote at all.

Sabermetric All-Stars are here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writers/jacob_luft/06/01/saber.allstars/index.html

The ranking for AL 1B are: Sexson, Sweeney, Tino. He notes that Teixera's SLG on the road is a meesly .472 compared to his .579 at home.

Tino isn't that bad a pick.

He won't get any consideration because he plays on the worst team in all of baseball, but Mike Sweeney deserves a serious look.

.306/.348/.530 on any team is a decent line. But to do it for a team that offers him zero protection in the lineup is awesome.

It's sort of an aside, since I doubt either one of them will make it, but how come Steve Finley has more votes than Garrett Anderson? That's just bizarre...

Teixeira beats him in almost every category and is an excelent fielder as well.
