Air Byrnes

A fine defensive play by Eric Byrnes to end the top of the 5th. The ball was hit in foul territory near the third base bullpen. Byrnes lept horizontally, got good air time, and made the catch parallel to the ground. Quite impressive, but he looks like he hurt his face on the landing.

I would imagine that, like most of Byrnes' defensive plays, he could have made the catch without diving, if he'd gotten a decent jump on it or taken a proper route. I'm getting really tired of him, and every time he makes a 'web gem' it just gets him a little more time out in left field...

as most modern players: balls that could and should be caught hip or thigh high, become TV / hot dog catches: this, aided and abetted by announcers that either should know better (former players) or non-player types that still think sliding into first looks like "hustle".
