Home Ron

There's been a lot of pixels lit over Brian Roberts' home runs, but another second baseman isn't far behind. Ronnie Belliard hit his fifth home run of the season last night, helping Cleveland to a 5-2 win over Seattle. Ronnie has shown more power than Roberts over his career, coming into 2005 averaging about eight homers a year from 1999 on. But he has a .408 career slugging percentage and is sitting at .596 this season. Also like Roberts, he hit a ton of doubles in 2004. His 48 doubles were 2nd to Roberts' 50 among AL hitters last season. Have these two middle infielders discovered a way to turn doubles into homers? That would be alchemy at it's best.

Alchemy? Well, some sort of chemistry perhaps, as inquiring sportswriters have previously noted, that Brian Roberts leave his creatine out in plain view in the O's lockerroom, not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. Supposedly, it's just been part of his rigorous off-season training regimen. As for Mini-Manny[to my eyes, he resembles a smaller sized Ramirez], Ronnie Belliard, one thing seems to be sure, this guy is a risk-taker of sorts, with a fairly high pain threshold, as it appeared to all viewing last night that Ronnie plays sans a cup, as we observed him on his back in obvious discomfort when he tried to receive a ball at second with Ichiro fast approaching. But it appeared that Ronnie was none the worse for wear, as he was soon back on his feet. And as the Seattle announcers pointed out: All the men among us can feel Ronnie's pain.
