Spitting Distance
Somehow, this doesn't seem to be the right year for honoring Gaylord Perry.
Baseball Musings is holding a pledge drive during March. Click here for details.
Why not? Gaylord was a great pitcher and it was never proven he threw the spitter, even though he played it up for psychological (sp?) reasons. He was a great character in baseball. This is really nothing compared with the current controversy in baseball. Yes, it is still cheating (if he actually threw the spitter) but it does not have the determental health effects of "roids." Besides, what young player (highschool or college) would want to know how to throw this pitch, when the majority of them want to be known for a killer heater? I think the Giants are doing the right thing at the right time for all three players.
