it would be very easy to put pressure on the ballplayers who have used steriods or players who are currently using them now. the living hall of famers need to step up to the plate one more time in their life and send their outrage to MLB and selig. they need to put the pressure on , complain , make noise say how all these power records that are being broken are being broken because of performance enhancing drugs. they need to be more outspoken to MLB and to the media we'll see how selig, orza and fehr respond to the feelings of willie mays, hank aaron, johnny bench, mike schmidt, carlton fisk and the rest of the great ballplayers who have made it into the hall of fame without the use of steriods.

I read this column, and Peter hits it right on the nose - Selig and Fehr are partly to blame for the problems with steroids in this great game. If they can't get together to fix what's wrong, they can lose their jobs and let others e with the right mindset to get tougher penalties, and thus get steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs out of baseball completely.

Was Selig really in a position to make more demands on the players union? The owners have lost every confrontation with the players in my lifetime. Saying that the owners and Selig should have taken the players on, maybe by trying to rachet up public pressure, strikes me as 20/20 hindsight. I don't think it was realistic at the time.
