Go West

The Baseball Analysts invite Jon Weisman and John Perricone to discuss the NL West. I disagree with the consensus that the Giants will win the division. I believe the team is too old to be consistent throughout the year. I see it more as a race between the Dodgers and the Padres, with the Giants third.

If you ask me, it will be the Dodgers and Padres neck and neck the entire year. I would probably pick the Padres because they are a great pitching team in a pitching park.

The Padres? Where's their hitting? Nevin, Klesko, and Giles are all declining, so they're really got very little power. The pitching is good, but definitely not "great". I don't see the Padres as being any better than last year, and possibly worse.

The Giants have improved from last year, but they might indeed be too old to be consistent. They're certainly a better ballclub than the Padres, though.

As for the Dodgers, if JD Drew gets hurt they're not all that solid a ballclub.

Klesko had an off year last year because of injury. In 2003, he socked 21 HRs in 397 ABs.

Nevin socked 26 HRs last year.

Giles had an extremely off year last year that I think will be corrected this year. Still, he socked 23 HRs last year.

So, I'm scratching my head at the question where is the power? It is right there in the three players you mentioned.

The Giants' downfall is their pitching. I absiolutely agree with the Padres-Dodgers battling out for the division and the Giants watching from the sidelines.

Of course, I am a Dodger fan, and I hate the Giants... and, I predict that the Giants will fall below the Dodgers EVERY year. :)

We can predict the future all we want, but the fact of the matter is It ain't over till it's over. Did anyone predict the Red Sox would win the penant last year? We can predict, and we can hope. The Padres, and the Dodgers are great ball teams, but I am a Giants fan, and I say, Let's just wait and see, we may all be surprised yet again at the out come. I mean, come on, Yeah they're not all 20 year olds, but don't we all get better with age?
