Ace Injured

Mark Prior is injured again:

Cubs ace Mark Prior will be out indefinitely because of inflammation in his right elbow, the latest injury to one of Chicago's star pitchers.

Kerry Wood, slated to start on Opening Day, is sidelined with bursitis in his right shoulder.

Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal said Monday the 24-year-old Prior has some inflammation in the elbow joint and a little irritation to the ulnar nerve.

This may not be serious, but it has to have Cubs fans worried. This team should have one of the best pitching staffs in the league, but if Prior and Wood go down again, I'm not sure they can generate enough offense to win regularly.

Ah, Dusty Baker, destroyer of young pitchers. I just hope he keeps making them throw 135+ pitches every outing.

For Cubs fans, it's looking like '04 all over again.

Well, minus all the Cubbie home runs, that is.

Yeesh ... Wrigley Field won't be the only thing crumbling if Wood and Prior are out for a substantial length of time.

the cubs had the 3rd or 4th best run differential in baseball last year, so scoring runs was not the problem. sure, the closer postion was and is still a problem - but it can only be better this year. the real problem was an ineffecient offense, and a lot of that was sammy and alou (and the manager). if the hodgepodge replacements can do better at all the things that alou and sosa sucked at, which was everything besides hit homeruns, they'll score plenty. remember, they have a very deep lineup, and the strong farm system and money needed to make mid-/late-season adjustments.

we'll see what happens with wood and prior, but the injury bug can stike any team - the cardinals were pretty fortuanate last year, we'll see if their luck holds up for another year.
