The Price of Sosa
Ivy Chat has a good handle on how much the Sosa trade is costing each side in terms of Sammy's salary.

Sammy is giving up a lot of money to get out of Chicago. Are things really that bad? Giving up a guaranteed $13.5M? He's not going to get that when he's a free agent after this year. (And, yes, I know that he's going to sign somewhere for 2006 and so he's not REALLY giving up $13.5M, but if he's injured, or something happens, then he won't sign for nearly that much money.)
Why didn't the players' union make a stink about this, like the did with the A-Rod to Boston deal?
No stink from the union because Sosa's getting all the guaranteed money. The money he's giving up is only if his option was picked up or if he was traded. To facilitate the trade, he waived the vesting option.
he wanted to go as badly as the Cubs wanted him gone.
