Sabermetric Tracking

Red Sox Stats is a site that tracks sabermetric numbers for the Red Sox and their minor leaguers. It also maintains stats for all major league players. A useful reference.

I also learn from the site that the Mets got their second choice, trading for Boston first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Boston may have picked the Mets pocket here. They get single-A first baseman Ian Bladergroen (what a great name!). Ian had a great season before a wrist injury sidelined him. Red Sox Stats lists the Sabermetric numbers for the duo, and Ian looks much better offensively than Doug. In a couple of seasons, this could turn out to be a very good trade for Boston.

Meanwhile, the Mets go from wanting one of the premier sluggers in the game to one of the premier defensive players. Doug's had an excellent OBA in the past; he needs to get it back in the .370 range to contribute offensively. He's never been a power hitter, and Shea will only make that worse. He's there to catch the ball.

Update: The Baseball Crank has more on the trade, and a lot more information on Ian Bladergroen.

OUCH! From Delgado to Mientkiewicz - what a downer. I feel bad for the Mets fans out there. I know they got Pedro and Beltran, but I feel that Delgado was the last piece of the puzzle for them to compete for a playoff spot this year. It looks like they'll be a better team, but not good enough to make the playoffs. And even worse for the Mets, losing Delgado means the possibility of trading for Sosa. Talk about rubbing salt in a wound! Perhaps they'll go after Magglio, who I have been begging the Yankees to look into.

Thankfully for us Mets fans, word is out that Minaya's "cabinet" so to speak overruled the idea of Sosa. I can only hope this remains the case.

Yes, Doug is reputed to be able to catch the ball. This is what was stated when the Red Sox signed
him mid-season last year; not reputed to be so hot
offensively. I can't imagine that the Mets thought
they were getting something different. I have on tape Michael Kay relating that the Arizona D'backs
decided "as a team" to give their World Series win-
ning ball to then-chief Jerry Colangelo (in effect,
giving it to the team). Aside from speculating where
that ball might be at this moment, it must have been a good feeling to be on a team like that.
