Roger Returns

Roger Clemens will be back in an Astros uniform in 2005 as Houston and the fireballer split the arbitration numbers and agree to an $18 million contract. It's the highest salary for a pitcher ever, and the highest 1-year contract ever. What a way to end the year of the old pitcher!

Hi Dave P. Alway enjoy B. Musings keep it up.

Roger 'fleeced" the Astros, but they could do nothing about except thank Roger for the 'fleecing'. This might be the one of the rare cases I know that the threating arbitration amount sacred the team and not the player. As a Cubs fan this pins the Astros down for the season. Jeremey Burnitz will be a 'tro this year he he.

Taking last year's salary into consideration, the Astros still get a bargain for a two-year deal on a Cy Young pitcher.

Still one Helluva lot of money.

wouldnt pay that much if Sandy himself returned to the Dodgers

though i would pay that much to go back in time to see him pitch

With Roger, the Astros are a legitimate threat in the weak NL Central. Lunatic fans aside, the Cubs have an even weaker offense than the Astros, and with Clemns/Oswalt/Pettite, the Astros will be formidable at least twice a series. I think the Reds cold post a surprising challenge, or the Cards will roll away with it.

In my view, signing J Burnitz would be a mistake. This guy strikes out at 25 % clip lifetime. The Cubs don't need another strike out artist. Mags may not be an alternative either. If they sign him, there may not be enough money to keep the core of good young starting pitchers together down the line. A lot to ponder for Jim Hendry. Stay tuned.
