Does this Mean BJ Upton Can't Play for the Rockies?
Denny Neagle's contract has been terminated by the Rockies after his 2nd bout of legal trouble in a year.
The Rockies terminated the oft-injured pitcher's contract Monday, three days after he was cited for solicitation.
"This decision is about an organization and the fans that support it," Rockies chairman Charles Monfort said. "Denny's pattern of behavior has not been consistent with what our organization represents."
Neagle, who has not pitched in more than a year because of injuries, was pulled over Friday in suburban Lakewood for allegedly speeding. Police said a woman in his car told them he had paid her $40 for oral sex.
Neagle's agent, Barry Meister, declined comment. The players' association could file a grievance to overturn the team's decision and get Neagle the remaining money owed under the contract.
I'm quite shocked that a baseball player would use a prostitute! I'm sure that's never happened before, and certainly not by a member of the the Rockies. :-) Of course, I don't know if Neagle was really in their plans for 2005. You have to wonder if the Rockies would react the same way if, for example, it was Todd Helton in trouble with the law.

Funny how the Yankees are also going after Giambi's contract but seem ok with Sheffield. If they saw Jeter playing pickup basketball, would his contract be terminated like Aaron Boone's?
Come on, we all know it's a salary dump - plain and simple.
It also shows you that baseball players, especially the overpaid ones, really need to be careful what they are doing.
I dunno about Upton, but I'd be hard pressed to see Orel Hershiser or Brandon Puffer in a Rockie uni anytime soon.
Grrooooaaaannnnnnn. Don't forget the other MLB BJ, Surhoff.
That's $10 million less he'll have. Oooh boy is his wife gonna be pissed, no mid-level exception on her finger.
I'm sure Neagle's lawyer will argue the Helton point, if there's any basis to challenge this.
And if that doesn't work, he can go the Sprewell route and sue his agent for not negotiating protection against this sort of thing . . .
Neagle will get every penny. No way you can unguarantee a contract over a misdemeanor charge. He hasn't even been found guilty yet!!!!
Good try by COL, but it ain't working.
Again, the Yankees aren't going after Sheffield because Sheffield didn't testify that he knowingly used steroids while a Yankee, or in the season before he signed with them. They have a weak enought case against Giambi, they have no case against Sheffield.
