More Debris

Cabrera reaches on a fielder's choice on what could have been a double play. It wasn't that close at first, but the crowd started throwing things again. The umps have had the stadium make announcements (although Joe Buck is not telling us what they said). I assume they've threatened a forfeit. There's 1 out, a man on first and Sturtze is coming into the game.

Update: The police are coming out to line the stands along the lines in foul territory to keep the fans in line. Very strange.

Update: With the game underway again, Cabrera steals 2nd and Bellhorn walks. Reese pinch runs for Mark. One out, and two on.

Update: Damon pops out to short. No argument on that one.

Update: Mueller pops out to Jeter to end the Red Sox ninth.

I was listening to the game on WEEI. They piped the stadium announcement made in the 9th over the broadcast. They did not mention a forfeit or make any other threats. The announcement was well phrased and went something along the lines of "Please uphold the high Yankees standards of sportsmanship." This was met with derisive booing from the crowd.

Maybe it would be a good idea if, in cases like this, the crowd could be informed about the ruling on the field. I doubt the umpires themselves would address the stadium, as in football, but maybe they could pass something to the stadium announcers. I've been at games where there was some sort of unusual play, and we'd generally have no idea what really happened until we got home and checked the web.

If the Stadium crowd had been told what the ruling was, maybe they'd have settled down more quickly. Then again, maybe not.

The postgame press conference featured a brief appearance by the umpire's crew chief and supervisor, and the crew chief gave a concise and satisfying explanation of what the rule was and how it was applied. So they're definitely capable of explaining themselves.
