Forfeit Frenzy

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com and Derek Zumsteg of Baseball Prospectus each offer their views on the Yankees forfeit request. Neither is kind to the good folks at the commissioner's office.

Update: The weather report doesn't look good for NY today. I wonder if they are going to get either game in today.

Update: Both games have been postponed due to rain. I have not heard about a make up date yet. With the weather looking bad for tomorrow, the Yankees will probably be forced by Bud to play a triple header at the end of the season. :-)

i'm in the new york area, and it looks like the weather is clearing up. they should get at least 1 of the games in, probably both

But don't worry, that anti-Yankee stalwart, Jim Caple isn't backing down on claims the Yankees are solely in possession of the blame.

Later.

And how about THIS article by Jim Litke (AP columnist) who thinks that Selig deserves praise for "solving" 'Travelgate' - Selig deserves a bonus for solving 'Travelgate'

Looks like the first game was postponed.

Posted by: sabernar at September 8, 2004 04:50 PM

Sorry, I didn't mean postponed, but it says RAIN next to the game. I hope that the rain will stop soon so they can get both games in.

Posted by: sabernar at September 8, 2004 04:54 PM

It's now 6:23 and no game yet. It will be interesting to see if either game is played.

David, I hope they do reschedule atleast one of those games for the end of the season. Chances are 1 game isn't going to make a difference (even with the yanks small lead..hell, they could be behind 2 games by then). Then the Yankees can just not show up and let the DRays fly up to NYC for no reason....

i guess i was wrong

Posted by: max at September 8, 2004 07:11 PM

just saw on sportscenter that the yankees are billing MLB for the free hot dogs and employee labor day overtime for the snafu

if the yankees aren't the most evil team in history i don't know who is, i hope every inch of yankee player/team property is destroyed in some freak accident, and all surrounding property left untouched for all this bad karma they are putting on themselves

Posted by: Brandon at September 9, 2004 02:31 AM

Yeah, I can't imagine whats worse...being the Yankees, or being completely in the right. Those jerks.

Posted by: richard at September 9, 2004 03:11 AM

A tripleheader would be so cool.

Posted by: John Hill at September 9, 2004 07:09 AM

Brandon,

It's not like major league baseball doesn't try to steal from the Yankees every chance it gets. That's what the revenue sharing plan is all about, right? Either the Yankees stop driving up salaries, or MLB takes their money. Then, MLB has the audacity to be upset when the Yankees are willing to pay higher salaries and the luxury tax. Selig can afford a few hot dogs; after all the Brewers have the highest net profit in the majors!

Posted by: David Pinto at September 9, 2004 08:44 AM

Revenue sharing takes into account that two teams play in every baseball game. If the yankees think they could have such a huge TV contract by seceding from MLB and just filming their scrimages, then by all means, George should do it.

If they rescuedule any of these games for Sept 16th, the Yankees off day before the start of the first 3 game set with the Sox. I'm going to start smelling a rat.

Posted by: Steve at September 9, 2004 10:30 AM

John,

I'm not against revenue sharing, but I don't like punative revenue sharing, which is what is going on. I agree that part of the Yankees local TV package should go to their opponents, but part of the opponents local TV package should also go to the Yankees. And it should be based on how well each team draws, whether at the ballpark or in the ratings.

Steve --

I'm as into conspiracies as the next guy, but are you implying that G-d Himself wants the Sox to win the AL East this year?

Coooooool.

The game might be scheduled for Sept. 23, the only day the Yankees are at home and the D-Rays have off.
