Mike's Strikes

Mike Maroth has a lot to be proud of tonight. He one-hits the Yankees, gaining a complete game shutout. He threw 127 pitches, 80 for strikes and he K'd 7. He's undefeated in seven starts at home this year.

It's a great night for the Tigers, also, as they match their win total of 2003. They are now 43-46. My guess is they'll finish close to .500, which would be a huge turnaround for this team.

Rather than repeat the tired and unimaginative things journalists and announcers feel obligated to spew regarding this team this year, that they 'represent the working class spirit of their hometown fans', or that the Tigers are 'good for baseaball', that they're a 'feel-good story after a forgetable nearly historic collapse'...and on and on...The Detroit Tigers are consistantly playing well, when they lose it's a close game, they're hitting well, and as a Tigers fan this year, I don't assume they will lose when I watch! That's all there is to it. Congratulations on 43 wins, and thank you, thank you, thank you to those in the Tigers organization who turned this team around, Dombrowski, Trammell, Cluck, and (AL batting leader and potential MVP) Pudge.

I remember at the beginning of the season thinking that it would be quite an accomplishment if they could turn things around from the historically awful to the merely bad. They've done a lot more than that. I think a lot of people involved with the team deserve credit, from the management to recognizing what needed to be done to the players for learning for last year's mistakes. Now, will they use this season as a foundation for a winning team in the future, or will the 2005 Tigers be like the 2004 Royals? Time will tell.

The Tigers are only 4 and a half games out of first place in AL Central plus are the only team in divison with winning record in the last 10 games. This team should have one of the biggest gains in wins from one season to the next. Mike Maroth pitching the one hitter against the Yankees shows just how far this team has come.
