Second Base Slugger

Miguel Cairo delivers his 2nd extra-base hit in as many AB to drive in Sierra from first with two out to tie the game. With the pitcher's spot up, Flaherty has to pinch hit.

Update: Flaherty hits a ground rule double to drive in Cairo and win the game. The Yankees sweep and now have a commanding lead in the AL East.

Anyone who tells you baseball is a boring game should be forced to watch this one. Almost anything that could happen in a ball game did. Heroics by hitters, heroics by pitchers, heroics by fielders, managing, manuvering, you name it. Both teams played like the entire season rode on this game; it was much more important to the Red Sox, but the Yankees didn't let up. I wish they all could be like this.

there are games to discuss, and then there are games like this. true RSN will be too drained emotionally to talk about this one on the airwaves in the morning

Dave,

I just came back from watching this game live at the Bronx. This was the best regular season game I have ever watched. I'm so tired that I don't know what to say about it because it was that great. I know Red Sox fans are hurting, but this has to be the best game of the year in baseball. It had just about everything a baseball fan could ask for.

Any non-Yankee fan who doesn't understand why Jeter is loved in NY, who thinks he's overrated, got a perfect example tonight of why he can be the captain of my team any day of the week.

Sheffield: I couldn't believe he actually backhanded that grounder.....I guess a solid throw was too much to ask for.

Like Rob, I was at the game--and in my 60 yrs of watching baseball this was the best regular season game I'v ever witnessed. How in the world did A-Rod get the throw over the shoulder of the baserunner, in to Posada, from his knees? Incredible--but just one of many extraordinary moments. Also, in this age of athlete celebrity and wealth, to see players letting it all hang out for the sake of the game! Wonderful.

Wow.

PROUD member of Red SOx Nation here ... but I'm not going to take the "I'm proud of these guys" / "There were no losers" stance of the Sox management and players. somebody on that team needs to get REALLY upset and fire up this team. That being said, that was the best baseball game PERIOD I think I've seen in ~20 years of being a Sox fan ... but as with too many Sox games this year, I just wish the outcome had been different.

Jake, a good start would be shipping Nomar out, now. If you can't suck it up and play through the pain in a game like that, you are useless to your team.

AMEN TC!!!! I lost some respect for Nomar after that game.

It was easily they best regular season game I've ever seen, either in person or through the media. Any non-baseball fan who thinks the game is boring should be forced to watch a tape of that game and tell me that it wasn't exciting.
