Giants Get Some Pitching

San Francisco defeated Atlanta last night 3-2. The pitching staff made the most of the meager offense the Giants batters supplied. Schmidt pitched okay, but the bullpen was near perfect. Four hitless innings, allowing only 2 walks while striking out three. Jim Brower's performance stands out, as he retired all six batters he faced, throwing 26 pitches, 18 for strikes. A needed win for the Giants.

Half of the Braves hits came from Marcus Giles, who continues to be on a tear. He was 3 for 4, and is now batting .387 with a .424 OBA.

Horacio Ramirez has been victimized by the Braves only scoring 5 runs in his 4 starts. He has allowed only 1 HR in 26 innings but has had control problems with more walks than strikeouts. The Giants after 20 games have only HR's hit by 3 other
players, Marquis Grissom, Pedro Feliz and Ray Durham besides the 9 hit by Barry Bonds.

In the bottom of the 5th inning of a 1-run game with all of their bench players available the Giants used Brett Tomko to pinch hit for Schmidt to lead off the inning. He struck out looking of course.

What is going on? That must be demoralizing to the guys on the bench.

Pathetic, isn't it? The Giants are carrying 12 pitchers, so that leaves five bench hitters. Grissom is hurt, Snow was sick, so that leaves three: Deivi Cruz, Michael Tucker, and Yorvit Torrealba, the backup catcher. Given the situation, I guess Tomko was the way to go, but it's sad nonetheless.

marcus is good!! short guys rock!!!

dave, zackly what great hitter off the bench is doing better than brett tomko? it does make some sense, especially if you don't want to pull any of the guys off the field.

you could even see tomko going out to play LF a-la simontachi in one of the cards earlier games

that would be interesting in an AL game, would have to be a crazy extra inning one to see it, but can anybody see mussina going out to play RF, or sabathia running down fly balls in center

They had Cruz, Snow Torrealba, Grissom, Ransom & Tucker on the bench.
Grissom was banged up and Snow had the flu, but they both played tonight so it couldn't have been too bad.
They could at least have sent Tucker or Cruz up there. Possibly in a double switch for Perez or Mohr. If Cruz & Tucker aren't considered better hitters than Tomko they have no business being on the roster.

Ransom was sent down last Friday, so he wasn't on the bench that night. How crazy would that roster be? Perez, Cruz and Ransom?
