Paying the Bill

Bill Mueller takes Vazquez deep after a Giambi error to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the first. It was a blast, going over the bullpen into the stands.

Update: Manny hits a Pesky Pole HR to make the score 3-0. Vazquez gave up 28 HR in each of the last two seasons, and the Red Sox appear to be exploiting this weakness.

Update: Jeter lets the ball go through the wickets. Maybe "let" is being too easy on Derek. Once again he shows why he shouldn't be playing shortstop. I caught two seconds of a game the other day, and what did I see? Ground ball by the diving Jeter. When was the last time you saw Jeter dive and come up with the ball?

Jeter dove to his right and got a force out at 2nd two batters before his error.

Yes, he dove and came up with the ball tonight. Trouble is, it's a ball that A-Rod or Reese (just to name the other shortstops in the game tonight) would have made standing up, routinely.

Come on.. Let's call a spade a spade... that play was a very good play and not at all one that A-Rod or Reese would have made "standing up". Granted, Jeter is a poor defender.. but the more interesting thing is Jeter missing the routine grounder, because it givesthe lie to all the Yankee apologists who say "I watch Jeter play 150 games/yr and I never see him make a bad play".

In any event, it will be a great series. Schilling tomorrow and I'm looking forward to Bronson Arroyo pulling a Buster Douglas against Kevin "Im a jerk" Brown on Monday...
