Bernie's Right Side
Bernie Williams is having an appendectomy. Torre doubts he'll be back in time for opening day. I actually find this a bit surprising, since appendectomies are pretty non-invasive these days. However, the person most likely to benefit from this is Travis Lee. I would think with Bernie out of the picture, the Yankees will use Giambi at DH and Lee at first.
Update: In related news, the Yankees have released Aaron Boone.

Even if it's going to be 3 - 6 weeks, you have to admit that's still pretty damn quick to be back on the field. I'm sure Bernie will be fully recovered NLT mid-April. (I'd like to see him back anytime AFTER the 19th being a Red Sox fan).
Like me, I'm sure Travis Lee is hoping for an extended recovery time (as well as Tony Clark and Giambi and...)
Did A. Boone get any cash from being released? I hope not 'cause he brought it upon himself.
Aaron got a bit over $900,000 as 30 day termination pay (I believe that's covered by the labor agreement, so it is nonnegotiable.) Nice work if you can get it, but he did beat the Red Sox in game seven, so I think it is still worth it. There is talk of the Yankees taking him back next year, so let's see: Aaron at third, A-Rod at short, Derek at second, Jason at first. Damn fine infield.
If that happens, I think you would see Boone at 2nd (where he played last year with the Reds until the Reds realized Brandon Larson wasn't ready)
