Opener? I Don’t Need No Stinking Opener!

Madison Bumgarner will open for himself, thank you very much.

After the Giants’ new president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi told reporters in December he could embrace an “opener” strategy, Bumgarner reportedly shot a quick, firm text to San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy.

“If you use an opener in my game I’m walking right out of the ballpark,” the text read, according to NBC Sports Bay Area.

Bumgarner is scheduled to make $12 million next year, and his bosses might say that those are 12 million good reasons to pitch after an opener. Pitchers of the quality of Bumgarner usually get to start the game, so the worry may be moot.
