Controlling the Telecasts

MLB sets to bid on 14 Fox local affiliates that broadcast MLB games:

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced at the baseball owner’s meeting Friday that he has the support of owners in pursuing the 21st Century Fox RSNs, which Disney is selling as a condition of its $71.3 billion purchase of Fox’s entertainment assets.

“I think I would characterize the discussions among ownership as very supportive of the effort to determine whether we can be a successful bidder,” Manfred said.

I’d like to believe that if MLB teams control all the broadcasts, there would be less reason to black out broadcasts in a given area. As cord cutting becomes more popular, MLB will be set to stream every game everywhere.

Maybe the lack of free agent money this year is the owners gearing up for this move.

Not sure what the aquisition cost would be but the owners still have 1.5 billion from the MLBAM sale that has not be spent on players
