Making an Improvement

The Mets acquired J.D. Davis from the Astros in a flurry of trades this weekend. I find Davis interesting because:

  • He has not hit that well in his brief time in the majors.
  • He hit for some power at AA, but was old for that league.
  • He did a great job of getting on base and hitting for power at AAA, but he was in the old section of the PCL, known for being a haven for hitters.
  • He’s listed as a third baseman, but played plenty of outfield and first base, which may indicate he’s not the best defensive player.

My thought process in looking at his statistics for his professional career, is that he will be a good, but not great hitter. The Mets, however, were terrible offensively at third base in 2018. So Davis, even though he won’t be a star, represents an improvement for the team. If the Mets can make a few more deals like that, they should at least be respectable for 2019.
