Harper and A Position Change

Last week I suggest Bryce Harper might work as a first baseman, and now a story comes along that confirms that notion:

That’s right: Harper, who has started all but one game in his seven-year Major League Baseball career in the outfield — the lone exception being a game as the designated hitter in 2015 — may be open to giving it a go at first base.

Scott Boras, Harper’s agent, explained in an appearance on MLB Network Radio that the former Nationals star has put in work at the position, presumably for the purpose of enhancing his versatility — and thus, his stock on the open market.

Harper and the Nationals did work on a deal before the regular season ended, but could not reach an agreement at that time.

That the Nationals made an offer establishes their interest in keeping Harper but does not necessarily clarify the extent of that desire. They could, if they wish, make an offer they know another team will beat, a move that would make them appear interested but not require actual commitment.

But people involved with the process indicated the front office held a genuine interest in consummating a deal with Harper. If Harper does not sign, the Nationals could still use an Opening Day outfield of Juan Soto, Victor Robles and Adam Eaton — a far cheaper option.

And a good option at that. In Soto, the Nationals have another Harper ready to go.
