MLB revamped the competition committee:

Matheny is one of four managers named to commissioner Rob Manfred Jr.’s “reconstituted” Competition Committee, his office announced Thursday. Matheny, his friend Joe Girardi, reigning National League Manager of the Year Dave Roberts, and managing stalwart Buck Showalter are the four active managers selected for the committee.

Cubs president Theo Epstein will also serve on the committee, and for the first time a broadcaster will be included with Hall of Fame pitcher and MLB Network analyst John Smotlz getting a chair. Another Hall of Famer, Roberto Alomar, has also been selected.

I like that the four managers are all good strategists. When new rules come under consideration to increase pace of play, these four should be given the task of, “How would I exploit this rule as a manager?” In other words, they might be good at uncovering the unintended consequences of a rule change.
