Surviving Without a Closer

The Orioles losing Zach Britton to a forearm injury was the big story for Baltimore coming into Sunday. What were the Orioles going to do? My first thought was, “Stay out of save situations.”

That’s exactly what Baltimore did Sunday afternoon as they beat the Blue Jays 11-4. The bullpen did bend, allowing all four runs in three innings, but it was going to be very tough for them to blow a 6-0, then an 11-1 lead. The offense and the starting pitching working together can make things easy on the healthy relievers.

The Blue Jays were more hapless than usual as J.A. Happ, pitching well, left the game with a sore elbow in the fifth. He allowed just one run and had the Blue Jays in the game.

Trey Mancini hit two more home runs to tie a record:

Mancini, who finished 3 for 5 with four RBIs, matched the major league record for home runs in the first 12 games of a career with seven, joining Trevor Story and Dino Restelli. He hit three homers in five games last September.

“It’s humbling to hear that, especially with how many legends have played the game,” Mancini said. “To make your mark in any way is really neat.”

I hope they play “The Pink Panther” as his walk up music.
