Games of the Day

A Cleveland win and a Detroit loss send the Indians magic number to zero for the AL Central win. The White Sox try to prevent that Indians win as Carlos Rodon takes on Josh Tomlin. In his second major league season, Rodon showed great improvement in control, increasing his innings but greatly reducing his walks. More strikes led to more home runs allowed, however, which raised his ERA. At seasonal age 23, he has plenty of time to improve that aspect of his game. Tomlin goes for his 13th win, which would set a new single season high for him. His 35 home runs allowed ranks third in the majors.

The Dodgers can clinch the NL West with a win or a Giants loss as Colorado sends rookie Tyler Anderson against Brandon McCarthy. Anderson pitched an interesting rookie season so far, posting a 3.00 ERA in 12 starts at Coors, but 0-4 with a 5.10 ERA on the road. McCarthy managed only eight starts so far this season, and walked 24 batters in 34 2/3 innings.

Finally, the Sunday night game features old rivals the Cardinals and the Cubs, the Cardinals fighting for their wild card life. Carlos Martinez faces Jon Lester. The Cubs knocked around Martinez in four games this season, scoring 14 runs in 24 innings. Martinez’s ERA in non-Cubs games is 2.84. Lester can improve his Cy Young chances with a great game. In 14 innings against the Cardinals this season, he walked two and struck out 14.
