A B.J. for the BJs

The Blue Jays acquired Melvin Upton, Jr. and cash from the Padres for minor league right-hander Hansel Rodriguez. The player formerly know as “B.J.” moves to the other dugout as the Padres are playing in Toronto. No doubt the Blue Jays saving air fare played a role in completing the deal. 🙂

Upton’s career somewhat rebounded in San Diego. Upton owns a .323 career OBP, but in his three season before joining the Padres, he did not crack .300. Since the start of 2015, Upton owns a .315 OBP, which is not terrible. He also has a little pop. He gives the Blue Jays depth in case of injury.

Rodriguez is 19 years old and still in rookie ball after three seasons. He has only allowed two home runs in 93 2/3 innings. He’s very young, but at the moment doesn’t look like a great prospect. I just hope the Padres have a Gretel in the organization. 🙂

The median OBP for the 160 players who qualify is .340.

Only 23 of those 160 players have a worse OBP than Melvin.

That seems to me like the definition of “terrible.”

tom » It’s probably miserable. As Alvy Singer said, the world is divided into the miserable and the horrible, so you should be thankful you’re miserable. 🙂

On a more serious note, you’re looking at everyday players, so people who are in general well above replacement level. The MLB average is .321, so he’s not terrible.
