Too Many Milliliters

CC Sabathia checked himself into alcohol rehabilitation:

New York Yankees veteran starting pitcher CC Sabathia is checking himself into alcohol rehabilitation and will miss the upcoming Major League Baseball postseason, the left-hander said on Monday.

“Today I am checking myself into an alcohol rehabilitation center to receive the professional care and assistance needed to treat my disease,” the 35-year-old Sabathia said.

“I love baseball and I love my teammates like brothers, and I am also fully aware that I am leaving at a time when we should all be coming together for one last push toward the World Series,” said Sabathia.

“It hurts me deeply to do this now, but I owe it to myself and to my family to get myself right. I want to take control of my disease, and I want to be a better man, father and player.”

That’s too bad, and it comes at a time when Sabathia was pitching his best ball of the season. I’m surprised this happened, he always seemed like a person who was in control. I suspect the fight in Toronto was a clue. Here’s wishing him a successful recovery.

He also had a tantrum in the offseason over missing a flight and was so disruptive airport security had to be called in. If he was not CC he probably lands in GITMO.

In addition, there was a recent photo showing him with what was alleged to be weed. It was reported that the photographer tried to extort money from CC and he refused. However, it was sold to someone for 15 K to someone who never published the photo. Curious

Generally, my experience with alcoholism which is widespread in my family indicates that people almost never go voluntarily for help unless there is a precipitating incident such as getting fired, hurt, arrested, hurting a loved one, illness such as cirhhosis, etc.

None of our business as to what triggered this I guess , but the timing suggests it had to be pretty tough

Nice post Pinto. This post “Here’s wishing him a successful recovery” shows real growth from the 2015-04-19 Josh Hamilton post you wrote wondering “can an alcoholic learn to moderate their intake?”

I sincerely appreciate your consideration of this disease.
