Kind of a Massive Tie

Baltimore swept a double header from the Yankees, and with Texas losing earlier in the day, the Yankees and Rangers are tied at 87-74. The Astros are beating the Diamondbacks 3-0 in the top of the sixth. If the Astros hold on for the win, they would trail both the Yankees and Rangers by a game. So on Sunday, if the Rangers and Yankees lose, then Houston wins, the three teams would have the same record.

What would happen in that situation is the Astros would play at the Rangers for the AL West championship, and the loser would be the wild card. Since both the Rangers and the Astros won the season series from the Yankees, the loser of the AL West game would host the wild card game.

I think the loser of the AL West game would go to the Yankees. The 163rd game counts for the standings which means that the loser would have a lower wining percentage than the Yankees.

Zachary Schrieber » If you look at the MLB tie breaker rules, it says that after the division game, tie break reverts to breaking a tie between two teams. Basically, the tie that is used to calculate seedings is based on the 162 game season.

I humbly disagree. I believe the MLB regular season would include Game 163. Since that team would now have one extra loss than the Yankees, and a worse winning percentage – the Yankees would get the home game.
