Arrieta on Top

Jake Arrieta allowed the Phillies one run in eight innings Friday afteroon as he won his 19th game of the season. That was enough to push him past Zack Greinke for the NL lead in Tom Tango Cy Young Tracker points. A couple of weeks ago, I thought Greinke had a big enough lead that he would be next to impossible to catch. However, Arrieta keeps winning and keeping runs off the board. It may be the last man to pitch wins it.

Since the Dodgers playoff position is more comfortable than the Cubs, that might be Arrieta. If the Cubs wind up fighting for a division title, or even home field in the wild card, Arrieta might be pressed into service for the last game of the season.

Clayton Kershaw actually leads in fWAR int he NL, while Greinke leads in bWAR. If you take the average of the two:

  1. Kershaw 6.9
  2. Greinke 6.7
  3. Arrieta 6.5

So WAR says Kershaw, the Tracker says Arrieta, and Greike has the great ERA and long scoreless streak. It’s going to be a tough choice for the voters.
