Massive Tie Scenarios

The massive tie scenario from the other day was off one game at the top. I had the most wins for the three-way for the AL West and a five way tie for the second wild card at 92 wins. It should be 91 wins, because I missed the Twins playing the Angels four games. Houston still needs to sweep the Astros for the tie to happen at this level, so the Astros winning last night was actually a good result!

  • Astros 17-10
  • Rangers 21-8
  • Twins 22-6
  • Angels 23-5
  • Rays 25-3

Here is the more likely 87 win scenario:

  • Astros 13-14
  • Rangers 17-12
  • Twins 18-10
  • Angels 19-9
  • Rays 21-7

The other five way tie involves just five wild card teams, and the Indians gained ground on Texas, Minnesota, and Tampa Bay Friday night. That scenario can happen at 92 wins.

  • Rangers 22-7
  • Twins 23-5
  • Angels 24-4
  • Rays 26-2
  • Indians 27-2

This would require the Indians to take five of the seven games against the Twins, the Twins to sweep the four games against the Angels, and the Angels to sweep the six games against Texas. I also suspect that the Astros would get knocked out of the top spot in this scenario. More likely here is the 85 win scenario:

  • Rangers 15-14
  • Twins 16-12
  • Angels 17-11
  • Rays 19-9
  • Indians 20-9

All-in-all, there is a decent shot at some three-way tie, either for the AL West title, or the second wild card, or some combination of the two.

For today, the best results would be:

  • The Rays defeat the Yankees.
  • The Indians beat the Tigers.
  • The Twins and the Astros can go either way, with a slight bias toward the Astros.
  • The Angels emerge victorious against the Rangers.

It would not hurt at all if Baltimore beat the Blue Jays. 🙂
