Games of the Day

The Rays try to gain a little ground on the Yankees, but mostly try to stay alive in the wild card race as Jake Odorizzi takes on New York rookie Luis Severino. Odorizzi has a great three-true outcomes line against the Yankees this season. In 12 1/3 innings he allowed no home runs, walked two and struck out 13. He allowed 14 hits and seven runs, however, as the Yankees used power with men on base to drive home runners. Severino owns a 2.17 ERA in his first 29 innings, having struck out 29 batters.

The Twins send Mike Pelfrey against the Astros and Collin McHugh in a playoff important game. The Twins are trying to catch the Rangers for the second wild card slot, and the Astros are trying to hold off the Rangers in the AL West. Pelfrey struck out just 71 batters in 142 2/3 innings, so it’s not surprising he allowed a .294 BA this year. With a .352 BA allowed with runners in scoring position, I would expect his ERA to be higher. McHugh, also a former Mets pitcher, is coming off August with a 1.89 ERA in the month. He allowed just two home runs in 51 1/3 innings since the All-Star break.

The Pirates visit St. Louis as they try to gain on the Cardinals for the division lead. The Pirates trail the Cardinals by six and one half games with six games left head-to-head. J.A. Happ faces Carlos Martinez. Happ owns a 1.98 ERA since the Pirates acquired him from the Mariners. He struck out 24 and walked seven in 27 1/3 innings with Pittsburgh. Martinez, like Ordorizzi against the Yankees, has a great TTO line against the Pirates, but a high ERA.

Finally, the Angles host the Rangers as LAnaheim tries gain in the wild card race. Martin Perez faces Garrett Richards. Perez allowed just one home run in his 43 2/3 innings this year, but his .302 BA allowed and .346 OBP allowed lead to his high ERA. Richards is 2-0 against the Rangers this season with a 1.84 ERA, allowing just nine hits in 14 2/3 innings.

Enjoy!
