The Hamels Deal

The Rangers and Phillies finally got around to making the Cole Hamels deal official on Friday. The Rangers get a left-handed ace to pair with Yu Darvish when he returns from his elbow surgery, and the Phillies get more prospects. Philadelphia also gets Matt Harrison to take Hamels spot for now.

The Rangers sent six players to Philadelphia, including lefty Matt Harrison and three top prospects. Texas also gets left-handed reliever Jake Diekman and cash. Hamels is due $22.5 million per season through 2018 with a club option for 2019.

Here’s the whole deal:

Philadelphia Phillies traded LHP Cole Hamels, LHP Jake Diekman and cash to Texas Rangers for LHP Matt Harrison, C Jorge Alfaro, RHP Jerad Eickhoff, OF Nick Williams, RHP Alec Asher and RHP Jake Thompson.

All five of the prospects are good and young enough that they should get better. I can see the Phillies doing what they did in the middle of the last decade, bringing them up just as they reach prime (like Ryan Howard and Chase Utley) so the Phillies capture their best years cheap. The mistake with those players was investing in them when they were past their primes.
