Deadwood

The Baseball Writers will no longer allow lifetime voting for the Hall of Fame:

Until now, the electorate has included people who have been active members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for 10 consecutive years at any point.

The Hall says in a statement “BBWAA members previously holding Hall of Fame voting privileges who are no longer active in the game and are more than 10 years removed from active status will have the opportunity for annual reinstatement, based on their coverage of the game in the preceding year.”

This is very good news for the Bonds/Clemens/Bagwell/McGwire supporters. The older voters tend to have more invested in protecting legacy of older players. As younger voters come into the ranks, who grew up watching baseball in 1990s, they’ll be more likely to vote for the PED crowd. It will be interesting to see if the vote percentage goes up for those players next year.

Yeah, they might hit 50% at some point. But I think it’s a bit insulting to the younger voters to assume they’re more disposed to vote for cheaters.
