Games of the Day

Scott Kazmir makes his Astros debut in Kansas City facing Jeremy Guthrie. Kazmir comes into the game hot, with a 1.35 ERA in his last seven starts. In 46 2/3 innings, he walked nine and struck out 40, allowing just one home run. Guthrie pitched much better at home this season, with a 3.81 ERA in Kansas City, versus 7.19 on the road. He strikeouts out batters at a higher rate per inning on the road, but gives up tons more hits.

In another possible playoff match-up, the Yankees travel to Minnesota as Michael Pineda takes on former bomber Phil Hughes. It’s a battle of control artists, as Pineda walked just 15 in 112 1/3 innings, while Hughes walked 12 in 123 2/3 innings.

Rookies take the mound as the Braves visit the Cardinals with Manny Banuelos facing Tim Cooney. Banuelos walked seven batters in his 16 2/3 innings, but allows a .182 BA with men on base. Cooney mows down batters with 24 K in 24 1/3 innings. All three home runs he allowed came at home.
