Collins Versus Harvey

Terry Collins addressed Matt Harvey‘s frustration with the six-man rotation:

“I guess the best way to say it is, ‘Matt, we’ll go back to a five-man, but I hope you enjoy watching the rest of the season sitting on the bench in September when we need you.’ We’ve got to make the adjustment, and Matt knows that.”

If Matt is only allows a certain number of starts, does it really matter when he makes them? Either a sixth man takes over in September or now, the result is the same. If Harvey does not feel sharp on long rest, the Mets might win more games with a five man rotation now. Then they can rest Harvey down the stretch so he can pitch in the playoffs, if the Mets should manage to start scoring and make the grade. Do you want a potentially higher probability win now, or a lower probability one in September?

The whole 6 man rotation is silly- if you want to limit innings, shut them down after 5 every now and then..have it pre set wi a long man in the pen…Since no one lets pitchers throw more than 100 pitches anymore- I don’t know why the 4 man rotation is not brought back..the total innings would not be much greater. The current model of 100 pitch limits/pitch counts/innings limits etc does not seem to be working. I think the biggest issue is that pitchers throw at max effort so much…people used to say that Maddux did not throw hard, but he would unleash a 92 93 MPH fastball every now and then…he just pitched at a lesser velocity and located…It seems that if you can throw 95, and pitch at 91-92,change speeds, locate well, then you could go to the 95 when needed…4 man rotation, a long man, 2 LHP, closer, 2 set up men- 10 man staff, leaves 15 bench players- depth, platoon advantage…Earl Weaver approves

So far Harvey has thrown for over 100 pitches 6 times… and hit 100 pitches another 3 times this season.

How many pitches over 100? He has thrown exactly 100 3 times as you said, and only once gone over 110. My point is that since pitchers do not throw as many pitches per game or as many innings per start as they used to, and have pitch limits now, that a 4 man rotation should be possible.
