Stats Battle

It appears that Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto is unhappy with the way Mike Scioscia relays statistical information to the Angels players.

According to the report, Dipoto met with players, coaches and Scioscia before Sunday’s game and told players they would now be given the information directly by the front office and that they could decide whether to use it.

The report went on to say that “at least one coach responded heatedly to Dipoto” and that Pujols “challenged Dipoto in the meeting, saying that the coaches are working as hard to prepare the players as they did last season, but that the roster is not nearly as strong as it was a year ago,” when the Angels went 98-64.

Dipoto, through a team spokesman, declined to comment on the report, but a person familiar with the meetings but not authorized to speak publicly about them confirmed the report’s gist is accurate.

My feeling on this is that general manager should interfere as little as possible with the way the manager interacts with the players. If you don’t like what the manager is doing, tell him to change. If he doesn’t firing is then an option. It’s quite possible, however, that Dipoto is not allowed to fire Scioscia, so Dipoto took this route.

Dipoto strikes me as having the weaker position here. Scioscia has long term success with the organization. If one of them is going to go, it’s more likely to be Jerry than Mike.

Wow, sounds like Dipoto tried to nakedly undercut Scioscia’s authority with the players. Glad Pujols stuck up for him. I don’t particularly like Mike, but that was low rent.

That was an idiot move. If I was the Angels owner, I’d be in a firing mood when I call Jerry into my office.
