Pitching In

The Phillies extended their winning streak to six games Monday night with a 4-3 win over the hapless Rockies. Cole Hamels walked one and struck out seven in 7 1/3 innings, giving up just one run. A similar good performance started the streak on May 13th against Pittsburgh.

The starting pitching of the Phillies owns this streak. As a group they produced a 1.60 ERA in that time, walking six batters and allowing one home run in 39 1/3 innings. They are going deep enough often enough to keep the bullpen fresh and to support a still weak offense. The Phillies scored just 28 runs in the six games, but with great starting pitching, that’s enough to win. We’ll see how far that can carry them. Outside of Hamels, I’m not sure the talent is there to carry them much further.
