One Streak Ends, Another Continues

The Astros streak came to an end Monday night as the Rangers scored late to beat Houston 2-1. Dallas Keuchel pitched great and solidified his league in AL Cy Young tracker points with eight strikeouts in eight innings. He pitched seven scoreless innings trying to hold on to a 1-0 lead. Delino DeShields singled and stole a base for Texas in the eighth, and Jake Smolinski, hitting .146 on the season, singled Deshields home. Chad Qualls gave up a double, single, and sacrifice fly in the ninth, and the Houston winning streak ends at 10. Kudos to Ross Detwiler. He struggled this season, but struck out seven in seven innings and allowed just four hits to keep the Rangers in the game until the offense could generate some runs.

Meanwhile, the Cubs looked like they were on the way to ending the Cardinals six game winning streak. The Cubs led 8-4 after batting in the top of the sixth inning. Starter Travis Wood gave up three straight singles to start the bottom of the sixth, and the Cardinals scored six runs over the next two innings to take the contest 10-9. On a rare bad night for Matt Carpenter (0 for 5), the three through seven hitters combined for nine hits and three walks, scoring nine runs and driving in seven. The Cardinals now own the best record in the majors and the longest winning streak at seven games.
