Two games ended yesterday when batted balls struck base runners. The batters are credited with singles, while the runner struck is out. This type of ending is infrequent, but if you play baseball on enough days, having it happen twice is bound to happen.
I actually saw that happen way back in 1987 at Dodger Stadium. I remembered that it was Hershiser pitching and Glenn Hubbard of the Braves got hit, which was enough to help me find the game on Retrosheet.
What I really remember is that it took a minute or so for the fans to realize the game had ended the moment poor Hubbard got hit. It was a line drive down the first base line, too, and he went down like he’d been shot.
