Sometimes One Game is Telling

Josh Collmenter pitched complete game shutout against the Giants Friday night. The game is remarkable for a number of reasons:

  1. Collmenter is not a dominant pitcher. He depends a lot on his defense, as he neither walks nor strikes out a ton of batters. That can lead to a ton of hits against him. He allowed four in the game, compared to 19 in his first 9 2/3 innings.
  2. It was the first complete game in the majors in 2015. When pitching to contact works, pitchers can keep their pitch count low. Josh threw 114 pitches, 70 for strikes. Sixty one percent strikes is not that good.
  3. The Giants managed just four hits on 28 balls in play, or one out of seven.

So Collmenter was throwing the ball up there, not dominating the strike zone, not trying to strike batters out, and the Giants could do nothing with him. The team is in a slump, and a game like this shows just how bad they can play.

Kudos to the Arizona offense for taking advantage of the Giants pitchers as well as they win 9-0. The top of the lineup is off to a great start.

Not to mention the Giants seem to be just awful this year–which as a lifelong Dodger fan makes me rather giddy.
