Less Bleaching

The Cubs disappointed the club’s bleacher creatures. The stand won’t partially open until May, and won’t be completed until June. Someone screwed up the construction timing:

The Cubs insist the left-field bleachers will be ready by May 11, with the right-field bleachers slated to open sometime in June. Bleacher season-ticket holders were offered refunds, down payments on next year’s tickets or relocation to seats in the “bowl” area.

“The seats that were available weren’t that good – either upper deck or back of terrace,” bleacher season-ticket holder Donna Wakefield said.

Wakefield took the money. Tim Shockley, another bleacher season-ticket holder, said most of the bleacherites he knows also opted for refunds, figuring the early games are played in miserable weather anyway.

I wonder if the Cubs had problems negotiating the corrupt Chicago system, failing to bribe the right people to get the project done on time:

Pretty much… They went to the city and asked for permission to work around the clock and were turned down. Wrigleyville has a pretty powerful alderman who has worked to keep Wrigley expansion in check, so maybe there was no one to bribe…

More of an issue was that the start of construction was delayed by litigation from the rooftop corporations that wanted to keep piggybacking on the Cubs product and didn’t want their sightlines blocked by new scoreboards, which is why construction started later than it should in the fall.

There was also a quite a lot of snow this year, making for several breaks in construction time.

(And yes, thankfully the Cubs had their round-the-clock request turned down; Lakeview is a residential neighborhood and the idea of doing construction there at night was ridiculous.)
