The Money of Price

I have to admit that I am blown away by David Price’s new contract:

Tigers starting pitcher David Price was able to avoid arbitration Friday by agreeing to a one-year deal for $19.75 million, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

The salary is a record for a single season arbitration contract. Final year abribtration deals usually come in at about 80% of the player’s free agent value. That puts his free agent price at about $25 million a year. I actually think that’s low given his recent WARs, which are between four and six. A four WAR player should be worth around $28 million a year. Don’t be surprised to see Price get six year, $180 million next year, and six years, $200 million would not surprise me.
