The Diamondbacks throttled their future international spending by agreeing to a large bonus for Cuban pitcher Yoan Lopez.
“The $8 million cost us $16 million,” Stewart said.
Stewart said the Diamondbacks weren’t overly concerned about the spending limitations for future signing periods. During the 2015-16 period, which begins on July 2, he said the Diamondbacks will have $5.4 million to spend.
“The limit is $300,000, but we still have our same $5.4 million pool of money,” Stewart said. “We don’t plan to trade it, but there are a lot of good $300,000 players.”
The Diamondbacks expect Lopez to be ready for the majors soon.
Arizona signed another Cuban, to a big deal, and get the first round pick in the June draft, so it seems they believe spending now on three top players puts them on a good path for the near future.
