Empty Power

The Cardinals out-homered the Giants 8-3 in the NLCS, Eight home runs is a lot for five games, especially given that the Cardinals finished dead last in the NL in home runs hit in 2014 with 105. The Giants pitchers kept them off base, with a .298 OBP allowed, so all eight home runs were solo shots. It was worse than that, as 12 of the Cardinals 14 extra-base hits came with the bases empty. The main advantage of power is that it moves runners long distances, often to home plate. The Cardinals had power, but it did little damage. That was a huge factor in the series loss to the Giants.
