Regular Season Ends

The Dodgers beat the Rockies 10-5 to end the 2014 regular season. Not surprisingly, the last day featured a number of low scoring games. Both Washington and Baltimore won 1-0, the beltway rivals each finishing 96-66, the Washington game featuring a no-hitter by Jordan Zimmermann. That was one of five shutouts on the day, the Cardinals also winning 1-0 over the Diamondbacks late in the day.

The Astros wanted Jose Altuve to sit so he would win the batting title. He wanted to play, however, and went 2 for 4 in the Astros 8-3 loss to the Mets. Altuve wins the AL batting championship with a .341 mark and collects a total of 225 hits on the season. The Astros improve to 70-92, a 19 game improvement over 2013. That’s not an easy feat, and Altuve living up to his long term deal was part of the reason why. If the Astros can pull that off two years in a row, they should make the playoffs in 2015.

Justin Morneau did sit for the Rockies, but he did pinch hit. He wins the NL batting title with a .319 mark. It was a nice comeback year for Morneau after years of batting injuries.

Derek Jeter played his last game, going 1 for 2 in the Yankees 9-5 win over Boston. Jeter finishes his career with 3465 hits.

It was a fairly low bar for making the playoffs this season. All four wild card teams won less than 90 games. Pittsburgh and San Francisco ended the regular season with the same 88-74 record, but the Pirates won the season series and host the Giants in the play-in game Wednesday night. We would have had the extra same result under the old, one-wild card system, but this way MLB gets to charge a lot more money for the game. 🙂

Lucas Duda hit his 30th home run for the Mets, only three National League players reaching that level this season. Nelson Cruz wins the AL HR crown with 40.
