Noticing Defense

Something that has bothered me about the Red Sox broadcasts the last few seasons is the ranking of defenses at the beginning of the game. NESN will show the defensive alignment and rank the defense on fielding percentage. At the start of tonight’s Boston/Pittsburgh game, the Jerry Remy noted the Pirates had the worst defense in the NL due to having the worst fielding percentage in the NL.

In the third inning, however, Remy noted that they hadn’t seen a bad defense in the series, that the Pittsburgh defense made a number of very good plays. I find it strange that an organization as stat savvy as the Red Sox would allow their broadcasts to continue to rate defense the wrong way for so long. Maybe this is an opportunity to show Jerry Remy that errors are not everything.

The Pirates do rank last in the NL in UZR per 150, but teams can make errors and still have decent range, the Dodgers for example.

Where do the Pirates pitcher rank in BABIP? You don’t make errors on balls you don’t get to and are scored as hits.

Broadcasters who played in the 70’s like Remy and Singleton just dont get the new stuff Red Sox are about money and ratings, and many of the older fans love Remy’s giggles although he lost a few over his son. I think he is gone after this year myself for other reasons.
