Angels Champs

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim won the AL West division Wednesday night as Oakland fell to Texas and The Angels won in grand fashion, beating the Mariners 5-0. C.J. Wilson and the bullpen pitched a combined one-hitter as Wilson allowed just one hit in seven innings of work, walking three and striking out seven. The pen was perfect as Joe Smith and Huston Street retired all six batters they faced, striking out three.

It was a big night for C.J.s as C.J. Cron homered and drove in three runs. He doesn’t walk much, but his ability to hit and collect extra base hits makes him a dangerous lower third of the batting order hitter. In a year in which offense is down, the Angels have no easy outs in their lineup.

It was a long road back, but the Angels return to the playoffs for the first time since 2009. That’s seven times to the playoffs in 14 season under Mike Scioscia, a great record for any manager. They own the best record in the league despite an injury to their best starting pitcher, and big contracts to veterans who have not lived up to the money. It helps to have a deep pitching staff and the best young player in the majors.

Mike Trout versus Bryce Harper in the World Series, anyone?
